EACF Foundation (E. A. Chaudhury Family Foundation) is a charitable organization, which was incorporated on 02 July 2019 under the Societies Registration Act 1860 of the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms – RJSC (registration no. S-13155/2019) in Bangladesh. The Foundation was formed in the loving memory of late E. A. Chaudhury, former Chief of Police (IGP) and former nominated Chairman of the Board of Directors, Pubali Bank Limited in Bangladesh.
Mr. Emad Uddin Ahmad Chaudhury, popularly known as E. A. Chaudhury was renowned for his honesty, integrity, professional achievements, and social/charitable work. He played an instrumental role in founding Metropolitan Police (he was the first Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police) and Female police departments in Bangladesh. His notable social work included – Founder Treasurer, National Heart Foundation Hospital, President, Jalalabad Association, President, POLWEL – Police Co-operative Society Ltd., and patron of several educational and social institutions.
Following Mr. Chaudhury’s footsteps, his family started this foundation to create a platform to support the underprivileged people of the society with everyone’s contribution.
Late Emad Uddin Ahmad Chaudhury, popularly known as E. A. Chaudhury to most people was born on 31 December 1928 in Daudpur village at Dakshin Surma upazila in Sylhet. He is the third son of the Late Khan Bahadur Gaus Uddin Ahmad Chaudhury. He successfully passed Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and Bachelor in Honours in History from M. C. College in Sylhet. He completed his master’s in international relations from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He had a keen interest in literature and journalism during his student life.
Mr. Chaudhury started his professional career in 1951 as a lecturer at Feni College. Subsequently, in 1954 he joined the Police Service and served successfully in different key roles during his 32-year career. He was pivotal in founding the Metropolitan Police (the first Police Commissioner of Dhaka and Chattogram Metropolitan Police departments) and the Female Police Department in Bangladesh. He retired from the Police department in December 1985. Subsequently, in 1986 he acted as nominated Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pubali Bank Limited, one of the largest local banks in Bangladesh.
Besides his hectic work life, he passionately devoted his life to helping people from all segments of the community. His notable social works included – Founder and Treasurer, National Heart Foundation Hospital; President, Jalalabad Association; President, POLWEL- Police Co-operative Society Ltd., patron of numerous educational institutions across Bangladesh. Mr Chaudhury expired in January 2009 at the age of 81 years and was buried at the graveyard beside the shrine of the famous Muslim saint Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) in Sylhet.
E.A. Chaudhury was gifted with a flair for writing, no wonder he was the editor of the school and college magazines. He succeeded in bringing out a hand-written magazine. He studied in Sylhet Government High School, did his B. A (Honours) in History from M.C. College, Sylhet and M. A in International Relations from Dhaka University. While serving as lecturer at Feni college he sat for the central superior services examination.
Mr. E. A. Chaudhury was appointed to the Police Service of Pakistan in 1954 and retired in 1986 after serving as Inspector General of Police for two years. During his eventful career he held charges of greater districts like Mymensingh, Dhaka and Jessore and acted as DIG of Chittagong range and Special Branch. Before becoming IGP he performed creditably as Additional IGP finance and development at the Police Headquarters.
